Are Men Done? They Are Failing at School, Work, and Life.

Richard V. Reeves documents terrible trends and suggests solutions that don’t come at the expense of women.

Over the past 50 years, boys and men have lost ground at school and work and they’re living shorter lives. They’re less likely than women to graduate from high school and college or to earn advanced degrees. They’re dropping out of the labor force in record numbers and account for two-thirds of so-called deaths of despair stemming from suicide, alcoholism, and drug overdoses..

The Brookings Institution scholar Richard V. Reeves documents these and other, equally dark developments in Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What To Do About It. He analyzes the structural factors exacerbating these trends—such as the changing nature of work in a postindustrial economy—and suggests solutions that don’t come at the expense of women.

Reeves was our guest at the Reason Speakeasy, a monthly, unscripted conversation in New York City with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy in an era of conformity and groupthink.

  1. Let societal trends continue as they are, and you will wish for the time when Toxic Masculinity only meant boys creating a list of the most attractive girls.
If you sow the wind you will reap the whirlwind.

  2. Elementary, middle, and high schools are dominated by female teachers. If you're a boy living in a single-mother home, there are few masculine role models for you. I've met men in their 30s who have never touched a socket wrench, and have no clue on how to use it. I've been saying this for 10 years or more. Noone cares about men's issues, especially if you're straight and white.

  3. This is literally the reason why Andrew Tate blew up so quickly and is also literally the reason why he is undeniably good for the world. Anybody that disagrees with me is an idiot and needs to watch this video again. Tq for your attention.

  4. Go ask any woman, I'm confident that the majority of women will tell you that they do not want to work.

Naturally most women feel a desire to csre for their children, homes, and husbands.

  5. There seems to be a sense of collective female pride and collective male guilt throughout society. As seen in the video, many contributing factors have gone into the decline of men; nevertheless, I think teaching young boys that they are inherently privileged and deserve no pat on the back for success has been proving the most detrimental.

  6. The causes of a "crisis of masculinity" or any crisis would necessarily occur in advance of significant material effects! It's very frustraiting that early concerns were and still are so flipantly dismissed, until the damage is already done. This seems to be a pattern for societies. Then again, hind sight is always 20/20.

  7. My son was 5 when he started 1st grade and was a nearly straight A student through HS. I would have never held him back. I think we should do away with grouping kids by age and group them, subject by subject, by anility and interest. It would also help them socially – real world social skills dealing with people of different ages and perspectives.

  8. Wouldn't a libertarian just reject the govt fiddling with the choices of independent actors? Feels like we have gotten ourselves into a much worse and more dangerous problem with idle men to solve a trivial problem of representation.

  9. Whenever I've been in a hospital, I always wanted a female nurse. Especially when being shaved for my two hernias (in the 70s). The idea of a man handling me is quire unpleasant.

  10. In 3rd grade I stopped doing homework but did well on tests. Drove the teachers mad. Had my parents take me to a psychologist. He determined I was at a higher level and was bored. My parents were proud. I enjoyed the afternoon away from school. Didn't do homework until 7th grade. That's when I became socially self conscious.

  11. US public chools are obviously antithetical to the needs of young men. Trying to delude ourselves into thinking it can be reversed or course corrected at this point is ridiculous. There are far too many people who are making money on the sorry state of it all. US public schools are a lost cause.

  12. As a guy it doesn't make me look forward to the future knowing that the goals for men are more trade work, nurses, and teachers… Meanwhile the messaging for Women is more scientists, CEO's, and engineers. It's just not very inspiring to have a society cheering you on to be a plumber or electrician. Not a bad way to make money but not the loftiest goals.

  13. Is it really so hard to understand? Men have been systematically undermined for decades. Our society decided to sacrfice generations of men. In my extended family (working class rust belt), two thirds of the gen-x and millennial men have already commited suicide.

  14. It's hard for me to relate because I went to a boys only elementary and high school. I'd be very curious to see statistics on how that affects the learning development, given that wasn't mentioned in the talk.

  15. Since the I'd SAY 50s the SATANIC NAZI WANNABE POWER HAPPY CONTROL FREAK HUMAN GIVEN government JOB TITLED TERRORIST TYRANT CRIMINALS have been USING MK ULTRA and other MEANS TO TURN the MEN into VAGINA CAP WEARING MENTALLY CASTRATED HUMAN CONTROLLED OWNED SHEEPLE SLAVE COWARDS. WHAT THEY ARE TODAY. There are VERY VERY FEW ACTUAL AWAKE MEN LEFT. Otherwise, WE WOULD ALREADY BE IN A REVOLUTIONARY WAR to STOP THESE SATANIC NAZI WANNABE POWER HAPPY CONTROL FREAK HUMAN GIVEN government JOB TITLED TERRORIST TYRANT CRIMINALS FROM DESTROYING the FOOD SUPPLY and EVERYTHING ELSE TRYING TO ENSLAVE MANKIND.

  16. One thing that did not get really explored here is the issue of marriage on the earnings of men. It seems that single men earn less money than single married women. It's married men that are swing up the average earnings for men. Yeah there is talk that they are married because of higher pre marriage income but that is not the case. So we got a situation where women are putting off marriage untill later and then find there appear to be no eligible men to be found. I have no really answers other than it makes sense for men to be married earlier. Like part of it is low paying jobs men are starting with nowadays, something like a union card was a ticket to a adult life or joining the military, but for most men this is not the case. The other part of it is so many women being married to a career for a good part of their young adult life.

  17. Why try when you are being blamed for everything that is wrong in the world and being openly discriminated against while getting the short end of the stick? There is very little reasons for a man to even get married in a system rigged against them in today's society. More men die of prostate cancer then women from breast cancer, yet we focus on women.
