“The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers — loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.

“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”

The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on YouTube. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.

“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”

But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news — the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.

It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.

“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”

With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on YouTube, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do — even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.

While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.

But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks — who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago — the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.

Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king — the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.

I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”

And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”

Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”

It’s probably for the best — the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all — class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people — frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is…”

  1. If you think white supremacy and racism is still the reason when the republicants take the house and Senate in November and Trump gets re-elected in 2024, then you are part of the problem.

  2. He's mad his approval ratings are low? I'm glad I'm now non-political for the first time since before I registered to vote. Won't be surprised with the Republicans winning in November. I'm going to still live by the golden rule regardless.

  3. Let’s give Joe some credit. He got us into a proxy war that could have disastrous problems for the world economy. He signed off on an inflationary $800 billion defense budget. He is keen on sending $63 billion in tax payer dollars we don’t have to prop up one of the most corrupt countries in Europe that is run by a nazi controlled puppet. By all means let’s talk up all the good things he has done.

  4. I'm listening and I see that American Lung Association ad telling people that vaping isn't safe. This is the sort of horseshit lying that gets vaping banned. The ad doesn't specify shit. It's scare-mongering the ignorant. It's almost as bad as a cigarette ad telling people it's safe. I'm wondering just who the ALA is serving here because it's not the truth.

  5. He 70% delivered on the 2k checks. If he 70% delivered on everything he promised in the election, then he's be coasting to a super majority.

  6. Then I guess Biden wants us to bend over and kiss his a$$, well I would never kiss trump’s and there is no way in hell I kiss his a$$. Biden you need to get your shit together or lose, I don’t care and would gladly to fight to remove you from office. Stop blaming progressives, stop with dumb idea of dealing with republicans that they WILL NEVER work with you.

  7. I dont think anybody wanted biden, but he's what we had to deal with. Being "the least worst" option isn't enough to get you two terms, jack! We need real leadership. to hell with these decrepit demons.

  8. Inflation is the falling value of $. "Wage gains" that do not make up for the falling value of $ are not gains, they are lower wages. We have been getting wage cuts since the Financial Crisis thanks to the negative interest rates and $ printing. Great for Boomers with their old mortgages getting a cut, awful for those buying because they push up the price of the property. It is a huge bag of shit for anyone below Boomers and those Gen Xers who got on the gravy train in time.

  9. The fact that they went with "ultramaga" opposed to "megamaga" is a missed marketing opportunity. Both are equally stupid, one just rolls of the tongue better.

  10. I watched the saddest yet funniest thing on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show today. Lawrence showed what the gop had done on something (can’t remember what) & then he asked his guest something to the effect of can you imagine Dems doing something like that? And then he & the guest laughed as if celebrating the fact that Dems won’t do such things. Because the media is stuck on this idea that Dems have to be the ones to uphold norms & institutions. Or else the country would go to shit. Never mind that what republicans do is bad. That difference never comes into play. They’ll talk about the bad stuff all day, but then balk when anyone tries to suggest that Dems should use the same mechanisms for good.

  11. The reason the Right, in general, is pro-tough-on-crime, pro-individual-responsibility, etc. is because, to preserve the status quo (which is their main objective), it is in their interest to ignore the underlying social dysfunction that causes these problems. Like the Right, Biden does not want change, and so he is WILLFULLY blind to what these polls are saying. His political position, not "mystification", prevents him from facing the truth.

  12. Both parties only do what their donors will agree to.
They will do the bare minimum.
    That includes these
" Progressives" in the Democratic party.
    That includes Sanders.
As Chris Hedges says Sanders has no guts.
He chose his career over the movement.
I threw my Sanders T shirts in the dumpster.
One of the T shirts was a picture of him being arrested during a Civil Rights Demonstration .
Then you know what it takes don't you Sanders? We all know what it takes as well.
But he likes to be in comfortable surroundings now.
From a podium he waves his hands and runs his mouth.
That is what he is best at.

  13. As a black man who didn't vote for this idiot because he sucks. Let's see why he sucks Native Americans getting land/money, Asians getting a Hate bill, Ukrainians getting money and citizenship, Afghans getting citizenship and money, black people getting George Floyd bill, Reparations, Police reform bill no wait We didn't get that We got a Hip Hop appreciation day and "Juneteenth" as usual We get shitted on. This is why I'm done with Democrats 6 years strong and counting.

  14. Of course, it's not his fault. I guess it must be somebody else's fault that he hasn't kept any of his campaign promises. Somehow, they'll use their media to blame the Progressive left.

  15. Yeah he thinks it's an advertising/marketing problem, which is SUCH a disconnect from reality it's sad…..he's literally puzzled!
Ha wtf Joe by like, "I'm not completing this agenda blanched from it's already meager genesis, I let Manchin bully me and the entire Dem party around to thwart all my attempts to do good (though I wasn't trying hard – some might even think we all planned Manchin play the bad guy so I could pretend to be on the moral side like the rest of the fake dems, pretend to be against his efforts but take no action of rebuttal), I got ZERO of the helpful provisions from build back better passed even though it's what my voters asked for/promised/deserved, AND no one important is shaming me for this so, the media seems to be going easy on me compared to Trump. Yet….SOMEhow the ppl don't appreciate my work.

It makes no sense. I'm ignoring their interests while pretENDing to care, like we always do, why is it not working??!?

  16. His polling was high after helping people with the checks. He lost support when he didn't defend himself on ending the war on Afghanistan (which was probably his best action as president.) Since then it's been essentially nothing other than replacing a left leaning judge on the SCOTUS with another left leaning justice (while the balance of the court is still 6/3 conservative majority.)

He did two good important things in his first months and since then he's not done anything that actually helps people.
