Ukrainian attempts to hold on to Bakhmut seem futile. I can only conclude that they think that forcing such difficult and costly assaults for the Russians will make them lose heart/morale. That's not going to happen, I'm guessing.
I could, though, almost imagine a situation like at Stalingrad in WW2, where the Germans sent home fake radio messages, supposedly from the beleaguered 6th Army (that had already surrendered/or been destroyed by the Russians) but were deviously transmitted from nearer home. They never wanted to admit the complete failure until later on.
The Ukrainians already have form, regarding avoiding releasing bad news to their people, with the denials of Solidar being taken.
