Christopher Lynn Hedges (born September 18, 1956) is an American Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Presbyterian minister, author and television host. His books include War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning (2002), a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction; Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle (2009); Death of the Liberal Class (2010); Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012), written with cartoonist Joe Sacco, which was a New York Times best-seller; Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt (2015); and his most recent, America: The Farewell Tour (2018). Obey, a documentary by British filmmaker Temujin Doran, is based on his book Death of the Liberal Class.[1]

Hedges spent nearly two decades as a foreign correspondent in Central America, West Asia, Africa, the Middle East (he is fluent in Arabic), and the Balkans. He has reported from more than fifty countries, and has worked for The Christian Science Monitor, NPR, Dallas Morning News, and The New York Times,[2] where he was a foreign correspondent for fifteen years (1990–2005) serving as the paper’s Middle East Bureau Chief and Balkan Bureau Chief during the war in the former Yugoslavia.

In 2001, Hedges contributed to The New York Times staff entry that received the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for the paper’s coverage of global terrorism. He also received the Amnesty International Global Award for Human Rights Journalism in 2002.[3] He has taught at Columbia University, New York University, the University of Toronto and Princeton University.[2][4][5][6]

Hedges, who wrote a weekly column for the progressive news website Truthdig for 14 years, was fired along with all of the editorial staff in March 2020.[7][8][9] Hedges and the staff had gone on strike earlier in the month to protest the publisher’s attempt to fire the Editor-in-Chief Robert Scheer, demand an end to a series of unfair labor practices and the right to form a union.[10] He hosts the Emmy-nominated program On Contact for the RT (formerly Russia Today) television network.[11]

Hedges has also taught college credit courses for several years in New Jersey prisons as part of the B.A. program offered by Rutgers University.[12] He has described himself as a socialist,[13][14] specifically an anarchist,[15][16] identifying with Dorothy Day in particular.[17]

  1. Chris:Both can be true- inequality in the United States and Russia interference . Look up active measures. Familiarize yourself with subversion (Soviet meaning not US). Create problems that don’t exist. Toxic individualism. American exceptionalism. These are the end times.

  2. The hyper individualism started with flower power in the sixties. This is when everyone was supposed to become ' an expression of their own' . Since then commerce picked up big-time on this idea, which is why we are where we are today.
    Collectivism can also be very suffocating & destructive though, as we ' ve seen throughout human history.

    Inequality of income should be reduced, but by how much? Market forces can not operate under perfect economic equality.

  19. The Chinese view is similar in evaluating the US. Its decline in Hegemony and ethics. While the brainwashed crowd and sheep believes the demonization of the Communist party of China. Their pre condition in Recruitment of people in the Government and Party is Virtue and Competence. They have gone back and learned the best practices of Government from their own history and from around the World. And found that Government officials holding power must have Both Virtue and Competence at the same time. Lacking in Virtue and only possessing competence will lead to Corruption, Nepotism and serving of Interest groups like the US is today while lacking Competence and only possess Virtue produces bumbling Government officials that is incompetent make decisions that is disastrous with the same effect as one that lacks virtue.

    Serving the people and culture of service and sacrifice is actually the Pre requisite to joining the Communist party. They are promoted according to ability to deliver and has no illusions about how Power should be exercised. Its also a Nationalist party hence Serving Country and People is at the crux of their Belief. Pretty sure Most Westerners have absolutely no idea about this. Or is so indoctrinated, biased and brainwashed to find thousands of reasons not to believe it.

    LOL westerner and Religious middle east are not aware that the Communist Party do have Belief and Very Strong Belief at that. But its not Religious based but Nationalism to build a Rich and Powerful Nation with Chinese socialism at its core. Most in the West has no inkling that Confucianism, philosophy and State craft of Chinese History also has strong Socialist elements. Throughout Imperial Chinese history every Dynasty held its Ideal to possess a Rich, Strong Country with their people at peace and with a full stomach. Not wanting in Food, shelter and clothing.

    Chinese history has always known that a Person that has Wealth equaling or exceed that of the State is a threat to the Country. Its in their culture with Popular meaning those with more wealth than the state possesses more Power than the Country itself. Its a threat.

    And sure enough the US today and most of the Democracies around the World are corrupted by Money. People join Politics for Money, Wealth and Power. Playing the Governing system and Government itself to enrich themselves instead of Possessing the Ethics to be the Custodian of the People and Country's wealth.

    Believe it or not but the Communist party used to admire the US Govt. Even though there are flaws but the Politicians of the Past have a sense of Responsibility. But sadly in has gone from generally a We the people Country degenerating into a me the individual as the Ultimate value.

    Courage, Sacrifice, spirit to serve is gone. Replaced by Militarism, Corporatism and self importance and greed. The Western audience may be familiar with the Greek version of Atlantis. From enlightenment but have degenerated into Hubris, Massive egoism and destroyed by Over indulgence.

    There has always been a balance between personal freedom and responsibility towards society and Country. Once Massive Egoism takes over translating into Extreme individualism, personal freedom and over indulgence the Decline is set.

    The US had the potential to guide Humanity to enlightenment but was consumed by the Power, Wealth and Greed of its own Elites and Oligarchy to maintain Empire that was never justified. The Motto is Freeing itself but enslaving the rest of the World to guarantee Hegemony.

    Hence the US empire and imperialism has never changed from Gunboat diplomacy. The Weapons of Mass destruction is not restricted to having Aircraft carriers sent to countries to continue the Gunboat diplomacy, it innovated to more and more ways like Sending Generals along side Diplomats to negotiate with African countries to force open their markets or the General will inform their leaders of the Troops the US has ready to invade. Sanctions is another Economic weapons of mass destruction, using USD as a weapon of mass robbery of valuable assets around the world by wall street bankers, control of Swift system payment worldwide to coerce following US Govt orders.

  21. As dire as our plight is, Chris gives me hope that though we may lose the battle today, our example and sacrifice will be a spark for the generations to come. POWER CONCEDES NOTHING WITHOUT FORCE.

  26. This is the stuff of conspiracy theories, of communist purges with millions dead. There is no such thing as a 'Corporate State'. There is no United States of IBM or Kingdom of Coca-Cola. 'Corporatist' influence is as much a malicious figment designed to murder entire ethnicities as surely as the Nazis' caricatures of the Jews … who conveniently they also lampooned as greedy capitalists.

I only wish that more people had the capcity to grasp this wisdom. Inspirational is too small a word, this is what divine courage, light and freedom sounds like. Thank you Chris.

Remember back in sixties a Billionaire was imprisoned and neglected by the people who he hired to protect him but they were greedy and it took a judge in a court case to order that Hughes should be medically checked as to health – they found a elderly man neglected. His vast wealth did. Not save him from fis fate! When USA collapses then "luddites" will return to haunt elite!
