Glenn Greenwald on Tucker Carlson, Chelsea Manning, Russia, and Big Tech

“The kind of values I’ve always embraced are heard more on Fox than on CNN and MSNBC, where they’re not welcome.”

No living American journalist has a fiercer reputation for independence—and invective—than Glenn Greenwald. The Pulitzer Prize winner helped break the Edward Snowden revelations, was once threatened with jail time by Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, and was part of the team that launched The Intercept in 2014 before resigning six years later, claiming his colleagues were censoring his criticism of the Biden administration.

So what are we to make of the fact that Greenwald, once a contributing writer at Salon who appeared regularly on the left-wing news show Democracy Now!, is now a fixture on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight? How do we explain the fact that Greenwald, known for his progressive critique of American foreign policy, is now welcomed in conservative circles but considered a pariah by many of his former colleagues on the left?

Has Glenn Greenwald changed, or have the rest of us?

Reason’s Nick Gillespie caught up with him in Las Vegas, where he was speaking at FreedomFest, an annual gathering of conservatives and libertarians. Greenwald was part of a roster this year that included Sen Rand Paul (R–Ky.), publisher Steve Forbes, former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and Project Veritas’ James O’Keefe.

We talked about why he has no qualms about appearing on Carlson’s show, why so much of the legacy and left-wing press is quick to apologize for state power, how the trans movement shows the limits of identity politics, and whether the state has any business regulating the internet via antitrust actions.

  1. AND, Ukraine IS NEVER gonna be a "VITAL US INTEREST " & always WILL be to Russia! That's not what changed: What changed is that, "we just wanna attack RUSSIA."

  2. Wait, HUNGARY + VIKTOR ORBÁN is an AUTHORITARIAN !?? STFU
Nick Gillespie really has a lot of odious beliefs. I couldn't even recall Parlor's NAME!!
And that piece of CRAP boringly says "yeah, mmhm, yeah, yeah, I know."
"There were a lot of technical issues." Freaking LIAR !!!
Parlor's suit should've succeeded!! AMAZON SHOULD'VE BEEN SUED for a lot.
Nick? You've become an absolute DOUCHE.
It's not just ONCE either. "But they're giving voice to conservatives."
    SO WHAT?? I'm an ATHEIST who's pro-choice (1st trimester).
THANK GOODNESS Greenwald seems committed to honesty.
Stop supporting this hijacking of the internet Nick. Ukraine committed a COUP … so like, of course he can't quite figure out WTF is going on in Russia.

  3. The giant boom of women working was a top down propaganda play, this massive push to get women out of the house and contributing to tax revenue did not start grass roots, it was not bottom up. This was a top down heavily funded political play to double the tax revenue into the hands of the federal government under the guise of women liberation and like most NPC'S who can't think past what's right in front of them they became useful idiots of the elite class like the rest of us.

  4. Glenn Greenwald is probably the greatest living journalist we have besides Julian Assange! The rest of the supposed "Liberal media" are actually mostly shills for "Centrist" corporatist Democrats that are actually RIGHT WING! THEY ARE NOT REAL LIBERALS OR PROGRESSIVES!

  5. The biggest problem with capitalism is that it takes advantage of poor people and their desire to over consume and that’s why everybody’s fat and disgusting and it’s ruining everybody’s life because everything is just so gross and terrible

  6. I love Glenn's shutting down of Nick on the "great replacement theory." I like Nick's politics, but his brand of libertarianism is spineless. I'm so glad the Mises caucus took over.

  7. Nick is such a try hard cool guy. When you’re terrified of the alphabet people it shows tho. It shows as a tacit acceptance of the « anti-racism » hot potato. It won’t burn you if you don’t touch it, Nick

  8. I am so done with the "Isn't it amazing someone from the left appears on a right wing show?" crap. If the left are so insane (which they are) let's all just stop it with the amazement that sensible people appear on Tucker. We should now be saying "I can't believe people go on CNN, MSNBC and their ilk."

  9. Interesting that the host, though claiming to be "libertarian" walked RIGHT OVER Greenwald, when he breeched on answers that the host's radar perceived we're headed into "no – no" territory as would be expected of the BBC or some other state or corporate media host, or was that only my perception?

Like, "Speak freely, but don't you DARE go there!"

Funny, also, how "bio labs" seems to have disappeared from ALL radars: left, right and middle of the road, as an influencing "heads up" ground , inspiring this "invasion", even though it was an admittedly serious concern, mentioned by Victoria Neuland (one of the designers of Ukrainian "democracy"), herself.

What is Greewald's (pretty "left") connection to Tucker Carlson (feigned as "ultimate right").

Both seem to be ultimately interested in telling not only "the truth", but a version unembellished by the "powers that be" state and corporate coverer – uppers.
I am glad they are there.

  10. Dear smug, feigning anti-establishment Interviewer: there is no such thing as a free market (you are an ideologue). Enough with the interruptions. Let Glenn speak. Also, project your voice when you do!!

  11. Glenn and many others get it wrong about Bernie Sanders not being a real. He has embraced democratic socialism simply because seizing the means of production isn’t really on the table. Does anyone really believe, that given the chance, he wouldn’t support nationalizing food production, housing, etc?

  12. What our interviewer fails to understand is the apathy, ennui and nihilism that used to be the domain of the globalist "upper class" has been intentionally exported to the middle and lower classes the better to control them and keep them in their place. It is the basis of modern culture. That he then goes on the reveal himself to be a "lapsed Catholic" says it all.

  13. I didn't used to agree with Glen.. but the comments on resentment not being healthy… And how this is being manufactured… But what can we say for a society that entertains itself with violence, breaths a personal, intrinsic hypocrisy and exhibits a prurient fascination with cruelty… Etc..

  14. You'd think Gillespie could understand that there may be a difference in required infrastructure between some podunk neo-nazi website that a few hundred people go to, and what's required for a platform hosting millions of users. Or maybe not, he sounds like an idiot often during this interview. The constant 'yeah's, 'uh huh's and 'right's while Glenn is speaking drove me crazy.

  15. Capitalism is probably not responsible for the decline in mental health or rise in anomie. We need capitalism plus culture, but we can add culture without truncating capitalism.

  16. Men and women work because we have to just to make ends meet. Then if one of you have an illness you're in poverty instantly. That's the system, not the individual. Works great for a future where you will own nothing.

  17. If I had a buck for every time the interviewer said “you know” during one of his rambling you know questions, you know that new Mercedes would be in my garage you know.

  18. You could describe crony capitalism as the centralization of power within big business, this description dictates that it is not capitalism. The issue with Glenn greenwald pointing out the decline in mental health is he's making a false assumption that the causation of that is capitalism. My argument would be the opposite in that it is our straying further and further from capitalism that is causing that breakdown in mental health.

  19. Glenn like others on the left have lost faith in the liberal establishment to reform and now they only care about putting their thumb in their eye. Going on Tucker, etc are really antics at best and cynical clout chasing at worst (and most likely the main reason.)

  20. I fucking hated Tucker Carlson, but now for a few years I have taken a liking to him, I love watching his show, and that's not to say that I agree with him, infact there's more disagreement than agreements, but he is a great presenter. And I don't think that he is racist.

  21. I was a progressive liberal for most of my life, because my young weak mind was manipulated by liberal universities and the artist community. I woke up after traveling the world and reading many books. Liberals are socialists, and socialists are authoritarians. Liberals are liars and cheaters under the disguise of saving other people or the earth.

  22. Excellent interview. It's obvious why Glenn GREENWALD is regarded so highly. He's NOT a WEASEL like most of the talking heads. I hope to hear more from you and Ric Grenell. Level heads that are for America, more than against it. We could be the best country in the universe if we made some basic changes like working together. Drain the swamp. Open season on all RINOS, MARXISTS and COMMUNISTS. TRUMP-CARSON 2024. USA1ST 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

  23. I'm glad Glenn pushed back on the trope that people don't want immigration because of melanin levels and aren't worried about letting in too many poor people that would vote for more socialist policies out of necessity. I'd love to see the clip where Tucker espouses such ideas about melanin levels, but you don't have such a clip, only projection and the ability to hear secretive whistles (sounds like q). And to pretend that first generation immigrants have the same voting patterns as 3rd generation is either disingenuous, or ignorant. Personally, I think we need to let in as many as we possibly can to stave off the placation of our corporations to authoritarian regimes, that have more people spending dollars on their products and using it to drive immoral actions like massive censorship.

  24. What I'd like to know from left libertarians like Nick Gillespe is whether they would be willing to let conservatives live like conservatives. Leftism cannot allow for true pluralism and diversity due to its atomistic & blank slate view of humanity.
