  1. This video is for clueless tech idiots… First off electric cars still pollute, where the fuck you think our electricity comes from? Coal!! I agree though cruise ships should pollute less..

  2. I worked onboard Pride of America Norwegian cruise line as a utility galley. I know first hand what crimes they were getting away with. I was doing their dirty work, hauling and storing the trash, the neon orange pulverized food waste (called pulp) only to be released into the ocean in the middle of the night during the longest leg of the itinerary. BTW, This was all done with coastguard approval. Spend your vacation elsewhere folks, cruiseships are wretched.

  3. I’m trying to follow where exactly your figures for car and cruise ship emissions come from but I don’t totally understand the comparison. It seems a little incomplete, or at least uses weird methodology.
    The 2014 IPCC wg 3 report gives direct estimates for the total emissions of various modes of transport, which I assume is what we need to be comparing here (not the emissions of a single car vs a single cruise ship, as it is just as obvious that a cruise ship emits more as it is that there are fewer cruise ships in total), and road traffic accounts for 72% of the total transport emissions. Over half of that is likely to be from cars, when I look at the total fuel usage of cars vs total fuel use in my country. Coastal and international shipping on the other hand only accounted for 9 % of emissions, and most of that is likely to be from cargo shipping, not cruise ships (correct me if I’m wrong, though it wouldn’t change the general picture here). Granted, these figures are for the year 2010 and are bound to have changed somewhat since then, and both cruise and car traffic have likely increased significantly, but certainly not in such unequal amounts that now suddenly cruise ships would contribute more greenhouse gas emissions than cars.
    On the contrary, it seems quite clear to me that the single greatest contributor to climate change from the transport sector (and at least according to one recent paper in PNAS, likely even the largest single contributor to global warming overall), is motorized road traffic.
    It needs be stated that going car-free remains one of, if not the most impactful choices one can make for their carbon footprint, because something I see cited as an argument with a worrying frequency are whataboutisms regarding cruise ships and planes (as in: "evil commies want to take away our cars, why don’t they look at cruise ships first?"). Other people going on flights or cruises, while despicable, being something we can not change directly, is not an argument to not change something we do have direct power over in most cases, namely whether we use a car.
    43% of car rides in my country are for distances of 5 km or less, i.e. distances any healthy adult can effortlessly cover on a bicycle (and likely not even be appreciably slower than when using the car). So in a large number of cases, the argument of "but I need my car" doesn’t work either. There is tremendous potential for emissions reduction in eliminating such unnecessary car rides, possibly just as great as in totally eliminating cruise ships (which we absolutely should do, don’t get me wrong).

  4. Royal Caribbeans upcoming Icon class, which will be the worlds biggest cruise ships, are run on LNG and fuel cells. I at least think that's a big improvement for the world's biggest cruise ships to be more focused on eco-friendliness. But generally, I think I could do fine without cruise ships.

  5. For somebody who does not have a powerful passport like me, we have no choice but to take cruises if we were to go to the destination visa-free to collect countries around the world.

I love how where I live, I am villified and taxed heavily for trying to keep a 18 year old economical car on the road and repairing it myself instead of us buying a new SUV that gets marginally better gas mileage. While shipping companies burn heavy fuels IN PORT every day and release massive ammounts of pollutants in the air and sea.
    Big ticket improvements should be a priority.
    Improving one ship makes up for alot of cars, and the cost is with businesses instead of private individuals. And even better as ships are often refitted during their lifetime.

  9. Euhm. Always enjoy your vids, but just to mention to the American viewers: Germany is a country, Brussels is a city in Belgium, so ''researchers from Germany and Brussels'' can be quite misleading.

  10. 0:38 false. There are 314 cruise ships in the world and they each burn 250ish tons of fuel a day each. That's nearly 30 billions tons of fuel burnt per year. There are 1.5 billion cars in service and if they each use 2 litres of fuel per day, thats 1.095 x 10 to the 12. A lot compared to the cruise ships.

  11. That’s cool but they also help put clean water in the ocean when all the waste goes through cleaning and stuff like that it actually releases cleaner water into the ocean you failed to talk about that.
