Selling "art" is one of the oldest money laundering schemes in the US.
A person sells drugs, weapons or services that are illegal, but that seller wants to legitimize the sell and make the income seem legit. So, they sell something that has a highly subjective value, something like a painting or clay sculpture. The people who purchased the original illegal product or service then buys the art for the price of the illegal service or product costs. Doing so saitiates the IRS and cloaks the illegality into a legal transaction.
