On March 16, 2014, the PEOPLE of Crimea had a referendum & voted to leave Ukraine & enter the Russian Federation (96.77% vote).

Crimea is an "Autonomous Republic" (a country or region having the freedom to govern itself or control its own affairs). When the Soviet Union broke up in 1991, Crimea became part of an "independent" Ukraine. So why was the will of the PEOPLE not taken up, and a solution sought on how to implement the people's desire without conflict? 🤔

Crimea (which is in the S/E of Ukraine) was part of Russia since 1783, when the Tsarist Empire annexed it a decade after defeating Ottoman forces in the Battle of Kozludzha, until 1954, when the Soviet government transferred Ukraine from the Russian Soviet Federation of Socialist Republics (RSFSR) to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (UkrSSR).

That's where Russia's Navy is located (Black Sea Fleet) ~ they've been there since 1783 (25,000+ including their Marines). The Donetsk People's Republic, Luhansk People's Republic & Crimea are Autonomous Republic (a country or region having the freedom to govern itself or control its own affairs). When the Maidan civil unrest (riots) began in the winter of 2013, the Prime Minister of Crimea (I think his name is Sergey Aksyonov) asked Russia for assistance. One of the reason(s) {among others) for the civil unrest was Ukraine wanted to ban the Russian language. 🤔
