I have also been contemplating why Ukraine takes so many casualties and never seems willing to retreat and preserve men and material. I have come to the conclusion that it still may be their best shot to make things as difficult as possible and gain as much time as possible. If they'd retreat from the Bakhmut defense line they'd only have the Kramatorsk line left. I think taking back territory against heavily fortified and defended russian positions is going to be even more difficult for Ukraine down the road so they may opt to cling to every inch of ground.
I don't understand what is not bleeding obvious about the Russian Belarusian collective security arrangement … you kept saying you don't see Ukraine attacking Belarus, but that wasn't what you yourself had just read out about their announcement, which is that a response would be triggered by an attack on EITHER … AND did you forget about the recent several attacks on a certain important military airport in Russia? You didn't put 2 and 2 together to think this might not be some kind of warning to Ukraine? – ie: "do that again, and we can attack you from Belarus" << what is not obvious about this?
