General Staff: Russia has lost 105,250 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24. Ukraine’s General Staff reported on Dec. 30 that Russia had also lost 3,026 tanks, 6,059 armored fighting vehicles, 4,683 vehicles and fuel tanks, 2,010 artillery systems, 423 multiple launch rocket systems, 212 air defense systems, 283 airplanes, 268 helicopters, 1,740 drones, and 16 boats.

Re the Ukrainian air defence systems…Russia are stepping up their military aggression and with the West offering to throw more defence systems including the patriot systems, I believe Russia are giving the West the middle finger.

I think Alexander you are failing to look at 2 areas.
1. Medvedev said they were holding back on their heavy artillery until such times it was deemed necessary and they would be taking into account NATO and US involvement before bringing them out.
2. Russia has obviously made a decision to step up their level of aggression. This is obvious to anyone closely following what Russia is saying and doing as well as Chechnya. Look carefully at the interviews Medvedev has been given in the last week or so …even the LPR governors have stated such.

Russia couldn't fight it's way into a paper bag, let alone out of one.

Missile strikes must be expanded and extended to all the unfriendly countries weaponising ,financing ,training ,advising, guiding Ukraine.

The garden variety of no less than six air defense systems being sent to Ukraine, shows the desperation against a nation that has 1/30th the firepower of NATO. It really makes no sense for Ukrainians. Then again, prideful people can be stupid people. It only speaks to the karma for them for 2014.

My understanding is that Russia has used heavy bombers to launch older shorter range cruise missiles and possibly missiles built for ground based batteries. This gives new life to older missiles and also keeps bombers far enough from targets that they are safe from AA fire.

From reading and listening to analysts who appear to have the correct knowledge, I wonder if the problem with western "experts" estimating the number of Russian cruise missiles and theater-based ballistic missiles is using the amount of munitions THEY can produce and assumes that the Russians cannot produce them any faster. There also appears to b e a gross underestimation of Russian manufacturing capacity. This may not be a surprise to those that follow well-informed sources, but it seems to be something western "experts" failed to consider.

A few points:
1. HAWK is a 1950s SAM system. It has been updated, but how do you integrate it into a Soviet-era AD system/
2. If the Russians want to do major damage to rail systems, they could target marshaling yards. These are central locations where different rail lines come together, trains are dispatched, etc. The Allies used such attacks on German marshaling yards in 1944-45. These are large sites, and you cannot hide them. You can only try and protect them. No AD, no defense.
3. MANPAFS are point-defense systems. As noted, they are basically designed to protect ground forces. They do not have the capability of long-range defense. Good luck trying to stop standoff missiles. Modern bombers have measures that detect and counter laser and IR targeting used by MANPADS.
4. The Su-24/30 series aircraft can use standoff missiles. As noted, the Russians have a wide variety of such missiles.Even old Su-17s can use such missiles.
5. Keep in mind that the Conventional Forces in Europe agreement only covers forces east of the Urals. Russia has great resources west of the Urals it can deploy.

Small point of info: the US has relied on 'smart bombs' with lots of electronics to get them to their locations. The Russians have taken another route from what I understand; lots of electronics in their bombers, communicating with satellites to check windspeed/-direction at different altitudes and other atmospheric conditions to release their bombs according to pretty precise (or 'smart') calculations to get to their targets. So 'smart releasing' of 'dumb bombs'.

I'd be surprised if Ukrainian Insurgent deaths are less than 250,000 .and for who,I think we all know.disgusting.
