About ten years back a young lad in England was run down by an American woman who drove off leaving him to die. The woman then drove home, packed her bags and got on the first flight back to the US, her husband worked in the US embassy. The UK has repeatedly asked for the extradition of this paragon of human virtue and been turned down. Not only that, her husband's diplomatic immunity was then mysteriously extended to her also (she didn't have it before the incident).
The case has been widely publicised in the UK, and the general attitude of the British population recently to American demands for extradition of UK citizens to the US is that the Yanks can go and f*** themselves! I think America needs to relearn the old adage: people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
America could still have had a monarch after independence as Washington turned it down but if he wanted he would have been king.
