Ukraine already gave their nuclear weapons away to Russia in 1994 with the promise of non-aggression from Russia. That wasn't worth the paper it was written on and neither is this.

Max Seddon quotes a fake news article from financial times. The Turkish government said after the Istanbul meeting, "we have seen progress … regarding neutrality status of Ukraine … but the other more difficult topics will have to be discussed at a future meeting." A top ranking Russian official later that day reiterated Russia's initial full list of demands and explicitly said to a reporter question that _"of course, de-Nazification still stays a priority goal for us"_.
Putin has always had these same concessions since 2014 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ Krystal bought into the state department imperialist talking points .
Russia did a huge face plant. The Russian army can't, or won't fight. Their equipment is old and in poor repair.
Everyone that believes Russia is holding back, look at a map. They have a lot of land to protect. China is playing nice for now, but they had multiple border skirmishes in the past. Russia is still technically at war with Japan, (they never signed a peace treaty after WW2) and the Japanese have taken the opportunity to hold military drills on some disputed islands. The US navy is setting off their east coast, and in the Baltic sea. And NATO has moved 120K troops to the border of Belarus.

the Wall Street Journal story about Abramovich and other "negotiators" being "victims of a chemical weapon attack" is 100% fake news . 1. Abramovich was not part of the negotiation team. 2. No evidence was presented that anything happened at all. 3. The Ukrainian negotiation delegation said everybody is healthy . 4. The Russian delegation said the same. 5. The US government said it was probably "environmental effects" (meaning: pollen allergy ) 6. Abramovich days later attended the meeting in Istanbul unscathed and as if nothing happened. 7. Bellingcat is a know war propaganda front of the CIA and MI6.

It’s normal when negotiating that the easy or less contentious issues are addressed first to establish rapport. The the least difficult issue follows and then the next until full agreement is reached.

If Ukrainian's think that they winning. They will never concede any thing the Russians want.
The war will continue until Ukraine either throws Russians out of nominal Ukrainian territory.
Russia will have to massively increase the forces in the field and try and crush Ukrainian forces in field and demoralise Ukrainian population to such an extent that they don't look west for the next few hundred years.
The argument about Russian setbacks is not really clear to me. Control of Kiev with the forces comitted by Russians was never possible. As the force ratio was 1 : 0.6, in favour of Ukraine. It's well understood by military men that in order to achieve success the attackers generally need force ratio to be 1:3 against the defenders.
So why Kiev?
Perhaps to fix a bulk of Ukrainian forces in and around Kiev, while Russians focus on the Eastern regions and building a land bridge between Crimea and the Eastern territories of Ukraine. The control over Mario Pol will achieve that end for Russia.
It is not clear that Russian's are in full control of the city as of 30 March 22.
It seems that Russia is in partial control of the city.
