The main killer of Russian speakers in Donbas is Russia with the separatists.
No wonder that more people in Donbas want to belong to Ukraine than to Russia.
US government conducted regular mood surveys in Crimea (2009-2013)- and note it's the AUTONOMOUS REPUBLIC OF CRIMEA (not Ukraine!), and the surveys of the locals in Crimea year after year overwhelmingly showed that they thought "Ukraine was going in the wrong direction." So why is it a surprise that Crimean voted in 2014 to join Russia? The same goes for the current referendums, the people have spoken, and they spit on what USA/EU/Zelensky think about their choice. All of the above had it coming.

The reason NATO and the US were so mad at Putin is because we were likely set to either assault UKR and Kiev to "restore freedom" and the usual resource grab tripe, or we were going fight alongside the Ukrainians in the Donbas for the same excuses. He simply beat us to the punch. We had been staging forces from Afghanistan (5k 82nd Airborne and others) and elsewhere in Poland for more than a year.
