As someone who spent 35 years in newspaper work, and has deeply read its history, let me disabuse you of several myths:
1. The American news media in any form has always been partisan. Period. That the partisanship swung heavily to the left since 1933 is true, but at least editorially the press is always partisan. Much media tried to be fair and neutral in reporting news but even that was often been slanted to reflect editorial policy.
2. Never believe the illusion of "objectivity" in the past. Even in the supposedly "neutral" days of the mass media post-WW II, the role of the media rapidly evolved to support the liberal establishment. The choice of articles to write, the type of investigative journalism, and editorial policy all evolved in this direction. All of the prominent figures we read in the papers or saw in TV in the so-called era of "objectivity" were Children of the New Deal. They grew up in that world and made it their world. They became the PR and cheerleaders for the liberal establishment. I suggest getting over any nostalgia for the era.
3. That media was fair game for the Marxist-Socialist agenda that evolved with "thoughtful people." From the New Deal and WW II onward the citizens were taught that the government was everything. The government could solve everything. It must solve everything. This sort of thinking was wide open for the growing Marxist-Socialist mindset among the intellectuals who influenced and teachers who taught journalism. It is now the establishment. We reap the fruits of that process.
4. Journalism evolved to be viewed as a heroic way to right wrongs, real or otherwise. The Civil Rights era, Vietnam, and Watergate only exacerbated this image. It made reputations, it supplied role models. It made journalists celebrities instead of ink-stained wretches.

there's no such thing as purely fact based objective unbiased journalism, because journalism is done by humans and humans aren't perfect machines, they have biases. Even if you only report on facts and sides of an argument, you're the one curating which of those will be represented, you can still lie by omission while perfectly reporting the things you chose to present.
That's not the standard you should hold propagand- sorry, journalists to. What you should expect from them however is being upfront about their leanings, or in the case of CNN employees, radical views. That is assuming they're not simply corrupt and paid propagandists, which they are in CORPORATE media, after all they're formed to be selfish materialist idiots when they enter a university.
